Kevin MooreBody Zone member since June 2003.
Although I am an original member at Body Zone since its opening, I
didn't get the opportunity to interact with the entire wellness
staff and their sports medicine partners until the fall of 2006. My
son, Kevin Jr., saw his hopes to play ninth grade football vanish
when he failed the physical in August due to a latent torn medial
meniscus in his left knee. Surgery, by Dr. John Martin of COA,
immediately followed and Kevin Jr. started at Holy Name High School
on crutches.
After four months of aggressive physical therapy with Randy Yocum
and staff at Commonwealth Orthopaedic Associates (COA) located at
Body Zone, Kevin eventually rejoined the Holy Name Junior High Ice
Hockey team in late December 2006. He helped the team go undefeated
and he scored the winning goal against Wilson in the Berks County
championship game! Seeing him hoist the championship trophy over his
head (after everything he'd been through) brought tears to my eyes –
truly a “Kodak” moment.
For me, the story begins in the fall of 2007. Annually on my
birthday, I visit Nathan Baron, Director of Personal Training, for
an annual body fat composition screening. In 2007, I discovered I
reached an all time high. I explained to Nathan that I needed to cut
20 lbs. to prepare for a big backpacking trip with Kevin Jr. in June
2008 to the Philmont National Boy Scout Reservation in the Rocky
Mountains of New Mexico. I knew that the trek would be vigorous. It
would be the "ultimate" in back country wilderness camping. I headed
back to the gym to work out on my own with renewed motivation and
trained very hard - well, too hard with two small tears of the
medial meniscus in my right knee.
Dr. Martin and P.A. Brad Nase checked my x-rays and MRI results and
quizzed me on my training methods. They concluded that I was
stressing certain ligaments too hard while not strengthening the
right muscle groups around my knee. I was ordered to intense
physical therapy, and off I went to Randy and the crew at COA.
Five weeks of 90 minute sessions on a three day calendar left me a
sweating, grunting menace to the Body Zone staff and other
recovering "weekend warriors." Ultimately, I was on the road to
recovery just in time to pass the physical exam for the Philmont
trek. The trek took place for 10 days in June 2008. Let me say this:
every father should be so lucky to stand on top of a mountain at
10,000 feet and "take it all in" with his son. To say that the trek
now stands as one of the most rewarding experiences of my life and
that of my son's life is an understatement. We are pleased to inform
you that both sets of knees held up very well!
Thanks to the sage wisdom of Nathan Baron at Body Zone, the patience
and foresight of Dr. Martin and P.A. Brad Nase to suggest a
non-invasive rehab technique, and the positive support of the entire
staff at COA, our trip was a memorable success. Without the "team"
at COA and BZ, I might not have been able to participate in one of
the most wonderful experiences of my life. Thanks for helping me
create an everlasting memory.
