Program Staff

Matt Herneisen
Herneisen is currently Body Zone’s Director of Ice Hockey and head coach for its Berks Bruins travel ice hockey program. The Bruins field teams at the mite, squirt, peewee, bantam and midget levels. Under Herneisen’s leadership Bruins teams have won major tournaments at famous arenas such as, Pennsylvanis’s Cambria County War Memorial Arena where Slapshot was filmed, and the Olympic Arena Center in Lake Placid, N.Y. where the United States captured the 1980 gold medal.

He played professionally as a center from 1998 through 2009. A Gilbertsville, Pa. native, Herneisen’s final two seasons were with his hometown Reading Royals where he served as captain. Prior to joining Body Zone, Herneisen was the Royals assistant coach for one season.

Herneisen went to Atlanta Thrashers rookie camp in 2002 as a free agent and followed it up with one of his best seasons. While playing with the Sault St. Marie Greyhounds of the Onatrio Hockey League, where his coach was former Flyer John Vanbiesbrouck, Herneisen finished second on the club in points (61) to former flyer and current Columbus Blue Jackets Jeff Carter (71).

Off the ice, Matt will be honored as an Outstanding Young Professional in the Community by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation on February 11, 2012.

Ryan Cruthers
Cruthers, a center, is no stranger to Reading hockey fans as he’s played for the Reading Royals since 2009.  He is currently the Royals captain and all-time leading scorer.

He made his professional debut in the ECHL in 2008. Since turning pro he has also spent significant time in the American Hockey League with affiliates of the Colorado Avalanche, Carolina Hurricanes, Tampa Bay Lightning, Vancouver Canucks and Washington Capitals (Hershey Bears).

Known for his offensive prowess, Cruthers has averaged better than a point a game in 216 contests as a pro entering 2011-2012.

Cruthers played collegiately at Army and Robert Morris University after a distinguished high school career. In his first year at Army Cruthers tied for the team lead in points and won the Heinmiller Award given to the program’s most outstanding freshman. He was second in scoring as a sophomore. Realizing he had a shot to play professionally Cruthers transferred to Robert Morris University for his final two seasons. He was the Colonials leading scorer both seasons. He was captain and a Hobey Baker nominee as a senior.
