An official developmental youth hockey program of the ECHL Reading Royals

Berks Bruins is a program designed to develop and grow youth ice hockey in Berks County as well as produce talented, disciplined players.  Players will learn respect for each other and their opponents and learn the importance of community.  Hard work and commitment will be stressed throughout season.

Coaching Information

Matt Herneisen will serve as the head coach for the Berks Bruins.  Matt has extensive experience in hockey beginning his career playing for the Colonials, Jr. Flyers and Minutemen before leaving home at age 15 in order to pursue a more advanced hockey career.  Matt joined the US National Development Program in Ann Arbor, Michigan before being drafted by the Peterborough Pete's of the OHL (Ontario Hockey League).  Matt then turned professional with Trenton Titans of the ECHL, followed by the Dayton Bombers and finally the Reading Royals where he served as team captain and eventually Assistant Coach. 

Terry Denike will provide goal tending instruction.  Terry was a 5th round draft pick in the 2001 NHL entry draft (152 overall) and has played five seasons of professional hockey experience. 

Program includes:

  • Three 1 hour ice practices per week plus 45 minutes of off-ice training per practice
  • Program begins June 2010 through March 2011
  • Will play a AA/AAA schedule
  • Body Zone Sports & Wellness Complex is the home rink
  • Bruins will participate in three tournaments

  • USA Hockey Registration
  • Professional USA Hockey accredited coaches
  • Professional Goaltending instruction by Terry Denike
  • Physical testing days throughout the season
  • Mandatory community service program
