BZ Elite Summer Recap:
The BZ Elite Girl's
Lacrosse Program had an
awesome first year! The
team, consisting of
mostly rising 8th
and 9th
graders, traveled to Bel
Air, MD, Marlton, NJ,
and Downingtown, PA to
participate in three of
the most prestigious
lacrosse recruiting
tournaments in the
country. When the girls
weren't kicking butt at
tournaments they were
practicing twice a week
outside in the 95 degree
weather and training
hard in speed and
agility class.
Over the course of ten
weeks I witnessed an
improvement and positive
change in all my
players. In particular,
Lindsey Covell, a rising
8th grader at
Wilson, was the anchor
defender for the BZ
Elite squad. Her speed,
defensive mindset, and
natural understanding of
the game played a huge
role in her success this
summer. As she continues
to improve her
stick-work and offensive
play Lindsey will
definitely be a player
to watch over the next
few years!
Lindsey's teammate
Samantha Marino, a
rising 8th
grader for Cocalico, was
an equally impressive
player on the opposite
end of the field.
Scoring 8 of the 10
goals in her last
tournament game, Sam
repeatedly charged the
net with no fear and
finished every shot
beautifully. If she
continues to exploit the
opposing team's
defensive weaknesses I
am confident that Sam
will be able to take on
any defender standing in
her way!
Over all I have never
met a more talented and
motivated group of young
women. They were an
absolute pleasure to
coach. I hope to see
some old and new faces
at tryouts in
September!
BZ Elite: What’s Next?
After a successful first
year the BZ Elite Girl's
Lacrosse Program is
ready for round two!
Tryouts are quickly
approaching so check out
our website for weekly
updates and program
information.
There will be two
opportunities to try-out
for the fall 2010/summer
2011 BZ Elite program.
It is recommended that
prospective players
attend both tryouts.
Any lacrosse player
will tell you that sometimes the only thing keeping
an average player from becoming a good player is his
stick. It is very important for all lacrosse
players at every level to learn how to adjust their
pocket to fit their game. Don’t be afraid to play
around with your shooting strings and sidewall
strings and see how loosening and tightening them
affects not only the shape and depth of your pocket
but also how your stick throws.
If you want to take it
a step further, learning how to string a stick from
start to finish allows you to put the type of pocket
you like in your stick and gives you a chance to
make couple extra bucks stringing your teammates
sticks. Don’t forget to also check your strings all
season long and replace any frayed or worn out
strings and tighten your knots on a daily basis.
At Conrad Weiser High
School Stadium the Conrad Weiser Scout (5-1, 2-0)
beat up on the the Exeter Eagles (3-1, 1-1) 13-4.
The Scouts controlled the ball for the majority of
the game and played solid defense taking the lead
right from the start and never looking back!
The Eagles were never
able to get things rolling with several key
turnovers and penalties, killing whatever momentum
they were able to muster. Weiser looked very
sharp on defense and offense but really took control
of the game with solid rides and a high percentage
of
successful clears.
Exeter was led on
offense with goals from Shaw Fegley (1), Landon
Gaugler (1), Mike Gorel (1) and Ronnie Zieber (1).
Bryan Crimm and Derek Stump each chipped in with an
assist.
Weiser had three
multiple goal scorers in Corey Elmer (3,3), Josh
Taylor (3,1) and Mike Oliveto (2). Dan Bray
(1), Luke Casamassa (1), Adam Engel (1) and Gunner
Smith (1) each tacked on a goal to round out the
scoring.
In goal for Exeter
Kyle Frey (9) and Dan Crimm (7) combined for 16
saves while Dallan Yoh had 7 saves for Weiser.
The season is a few
weeks old and it's time for Mike's top 7! As
of April 5th, 2010 my Berks County Lacrosse
Rankings.
1. Conrad Weiser
2. Wyomissing
3. Exeter
4. Wilson
5. Holy Name

7. Governor Mifflin

I
arrived up at Conrad Weiser's lacrosse practice just
in time to see the JV team break off to do drills to
the side and the Varsity team
get into full field clears and rides. The
pace was non-stop and the amount of info coming out
of first year coach John Verno's mouth was almost
overwhelming. After three straight county
championships, Weiser started from scratch this
season learning all new plays and terminology. 20
minutes went by and
coach Verno went over
three new rides, while at the same time he went over
the different clear packages. My head was spinning
listening to coach Verno
spit out calls left and right, but to my surprise
his players seemed to pick it up quickly.
Another 20 minutes
went by and the JV team, led by
coach Cooper, came back to the field while
the varsity team got into man-up/man-down. Once
again the pace was non-stop as all new calls and
plays were put in place. Practice ended with a
fanatic scramble drill, player
after
player being sent in until a 6 vs. 6
situation was reached.
Once again coach Verno
shouted out instructions to his team and kept the
pace quick, working in some hidden conditioning.
Finally Coach Verno
called both the JV and Varsity into a huddle and
recapped the practice and talked about the next days
practice and the Hershey game later that week.
The team looked good
and should be one of the contenders for the county
championship this season. Depth at midfield will be
the real question mark along with goalie, but the
Scouts return a strong attack and defensive units
that should carry them.
